Placement Testing

Before starting Spanish coursework, students are strongly encouraged to take the WebCAPE Placement exam. This applies equally to students who acquired Spanish in academic or non-academic settings (e.g., heritage and native speakers). For more details, see Foreign Language Testing.

Language Proficiency Expectations

Students are expected to demonstrate sustained advances throughout their academic career, regardless of where they start. Intermediate Mid proficiency in both speaking and writing modalities, per the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, should be the goal of every student in the Spanish Teaching major. Proficiency testing along the way will help students make appropriate course selections and extra-curricular experience decisions.

Students will be tested for speaking proficiency in SPAN 222 , where intermediate low is a minimum target. Students can gain additional speaking practice in the Intermediate (SPAN 290 ) and Advanced (SPAN 390 ) Conversation Labs.

Writing proficiency will be tested at the end of SPAN 301 , where intermediate low is a minimum target. Students will be tested again in SPAN 320  or SPAN 321 .
